Schefferville

During community events and cultural gatherings, spend some time together sharing bannock, the traditional Indigenous flatbread baked in an oven, over hot embers or fried. It’s often served with lake trout or brook trout smoked using traditional methods. These meaningful exchanges with members of the Matimekush-Lac John and Kawawachikamach communities will give you a deeper appreciation of their profound connection to the land.

Bordering the town, this lake is surrounded by windswept black spruce and lichen shaped by the northern climate. While there aren’t any designated trails, you can explore the lake’s shoreline and nearby paths to admire the sky reflecting on the water at dusk. This is a peaceful place to spot ptarmigans, waterfowl and sometimes birds of prey in flight. 

At the community centre or directly from Schefferville artisans, you can pick up one-of-a-kind souvenirs like genuine handmade moccasins, traditional woven wooden snowshoes or beaded jewelry showcasing distinctive Naskapi geometric designs.

Grab your camera! The areas around town are outstanding for photography—the contrast between the iron-rich red soil, the pale caribou moss and the arctic sky makes for incredible visual compositions.

The park showcases several pieces of local mining heritage, including The Iron Man, an imposing 6.7-metre sculpture, and The Iron Tree. Nearby, at the corner of Montagnais St. and Knob Lake St., another piece of art made from railway parts pays tribute to famed poet and singer-songwriter Gilles Vigneault.
