La Romaine
Beyond the roads: the sheer wonder of the river and Innu culture
Not to be confused with the Romaine hydroelectric complex located further west near Havre-Saint-Pierre, this settlement brings together the village of La Romaine and the Unamen Shipu Innu community. Named Ulaman in Innu-aimun in reference to the red ochre that tints the river waters in spring and set about 400 km east of Sept-Îles on the Lower North Shore, this remote community carefully preserves its cultural heritage and ancestral traditions. Visiting La Romaine means discovering a fascinating fur-trading and fishing past, a spectacular coastline opening onto the Gulf and a warm, welcoming population.
