Step back in time at this unique heritage site on Havre Aubert Island, at the southernmost tip of the archipelago. The cultural and social heart of the area, where the first Acadian inhabitants settled in the late 18th century, offers visitors a look at how people lived, fished, shopped, worshipped and played 150 years ago. The traditional houses built alongside the peddle beach now sit side by side with a museum, boutiques, restaurants, cafés and an event space. Here, you’ll gain an understanding of the past and the present of islanders.

The Îles-de-la-Madeleine goes by many names—for example, it’s sometimes colloquially known as the Maggies—so it should come as no surprise that the area abounds with a rich language, which is actually a collection of dialects and accents almost as numerous as the islands that make up the archipelago. (And if you’re counting, there are 12 islands, of which 7 are inhabited.) You may hear some beautiful terms such as “pied-de-vent” (literally, wind-foot or wind-stem) and “loup-marin” (literally, sea-wolf), which respectively describe sunbeams that pierce clouds like a column (what we in English would colourfully call “Jacob’s ladder” or “a stairway to heaven”) and a seal, an animal that’s central to a Madelinot delicacy. Fun fact: “Pied-de-vent” is the name of a famous local cheese. Another unique feature here are the accents, as are the many and varied expressions. These all harken back to the Acadian heritage of the islanders and are on show in the early fall during the international storytelling festival, where you can hear salty yarns, legends passed down through generations and more modern tales. And raconteurs give lively performances in the summertime. But whenever you choose to visit, you’re sure to be charmed by the singular oral culture.
